PFAS Contamination in the Haw River and Jordan Lake: Implications for human exposure in Pittsboro, NC residents

Description:  Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of fluorinated compounds that have been used primarily as water and grease repellents in a number of products, including food packaging, textiles, fire-fighting foam and as polymer coatings (e.g. non-stick cookware).  Their large production volume and use has resulted in their wide-spread detection in the environment, particularly in surface and groundwater, where there is increasing concern for exposure and health risks. This presentation will summarize research on the spatial and temporal PFAS concentrations monitored along the Haw River and Jordan Lake between 2018-2021.  Additional research was conducted to assess PFAS exposure in Pittsboro residents since their drinking water source is the Haw River.  Analysis of blood samples collected from Pittsboro residents reveals that PFAS exposure is approximately 5 times higher in Pittsboro compared to exposure in the US general population. Additionally, exposure modeling suggests that drinking water is the primary source of exposure.  Future studies are needed to understand the full impact of PFAS exposure across NC.

New Frontiers for PFAS Treatment

Description: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) refers to over 5,000 different man-made fluorinated compounds that are often present as mixtures in aqueous-film forming foam (AFFF), various commercial and industrial products and processes, and consequently in the environment. Treatment is a challenge, as many perfluoroalkyl substances are long-lived or partially degrade to form long-lived and highly stable compounds. Granular activated carbon and ion exchange are commonly used to treat PFAS in surface water and groundwater supplies. This presentation will describe new frontiers in PFAS treatment including innovative destructive technologies for PFAS and a lines of evidence approach for assessing the efficacy of PFAS treatment.
